Abu Huraira r.a. reported: “The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has willed me to do three things: three fasts every month, two rak'ahs of the forenoon (dhuha) prayer, and observing witr prayer before going to bed.”
(Sahih Bukhari and Muslim)
Huraian Hadith:
- The road to reach the level of ihsan is through performing all things compulsory or required. A level higher than that is to do the practices that lead to taqarrub to Allah s.w.t. through an-Nawafil practices (voluntary).
- In order to perform these practices, one really requires jihad, the ability and willingness of the heart, continuous determination and focus on Allah s.w.t. alone.
- Among the recommended practices encouraged by Rasulullah (peace and blessings be upon him) are as follows:
- Dhuha prayers done with a minimum of two rak’ahs and favourable in eight rak`ahs. The time is when the sun is about the height of a pole.
- Fasting for three days in a month, especially in the ‘white’ days (13th, 14th and 15th day of the Qamariah month).
-
Performing the witr prayer which is the most important prayer after the obligatory prayers. The time begins after ‘Isya prayers until dawn. The minimum number of rak'ah is 1 and the maximum is 11. It is called witr as therak'ah is performed in odd numbers.
- In performing religious activities, we must not only be concerned with the quantity of the practice without considering the quality of it as there is no point in practising a lot if it is not accepted by Allah s.w.t. This may probably be due to the ibadah done without concentration or because of the feeling of riya' and ujub which destroy the rewards.
